Departing for British Columbia
Departing the Olympic Peninsula for Victoria, British Columbia, the M.V. Coho crosses the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the international waterway that connects the Pacific Ocean and the Salish Sea. For me, the feeling was of departure to places unknown. We were spending the day on the Island of Vancouver, yet it felt like we could have been leaving the homeland and immigrating to a new world. How many of our ancestors were from small towns and looked back at the port they were leaving with everything they owned on board. Everything they knew behind them. How did they ever do it?
