Sandpipers Seek Treasure on a Coquina Shoreline in Florida

Looking for food, these sandpipers (or Sanderlings) are out testing the waters of a unique Coquina Shoreline. Formed by a process that began in the Pleistocene era, tiny coral and shell fragments, primarily from the coquina clam, are pressed together in a process called lithification. Over time, dissolved calcium forms a natural glue to hold the fragments together. The largest such formation in Florida is here at Washington Oaks Gardens State Park. To get the mood of this shot took a few trials. Too big a wave and the birds were gone. Too small a wave and not enough action. I like how some of the birds seem to be watching for the next wave coming in, while others are focused entirely on food. Do you suppose they take turns? (Palm Coast, Florida)
