Mackinac Bridge

The Mighty Mac

Whether driving over or sailing under, either way it certainly fits the nickname Mighty Mac! Completed in 1958, the Mackinac Bridge connects Michigan’s lower and upper peninsulas and separates Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. I remember as a kid the first time I was sailing under the bridge. We had been sailing all night from Wisconsin, and we were not used to going under such a massive structure. “Will we fit under?” As you get closer you realize it’s not even going to be close. Our 30-foot mast vs 155 feet of clearance. The size of a 14-story building. Silly us. (St. Ignace, Michigan)
