Teddy Roosevelt was a city kid, born and raised in the Manhattan borough of New York City. But after his wife and mother died on the same day in 1884, he retreated to the Dakota Territory to find solace in the “strenuous life,” famously stating, “I never would have been President if it had not been for my experiences in North Dakota” – Theodore Roosevelt National Park.
