Dignity stands proudly above the Missouri River

When traveling across South Dakota, the Missouri River marks a striking transition from the tallgrass prairie of the east to the shortgrass prairie of the west. On a high bluff overlooking the wide Missouri stands Dignity of Earth and Sky, a 50-foot tribute to the Lakota and Dakota cultures, whose people inhabited tallgrass and shortgrass prairie lands that today span seven U.S. states. According to the statue’s creator, Dale Claude Lamphere, Dignity symbolizes respect and hope for the future while recognizing the historically overlooked strength and spirit of Indigenous women across generations. Beautifully crafted from stainless steel, the statue is a powerful reminder that great nations of noble people made the prairie their home for countless generations before European explorers arrived.
