White Sand Picnic

Don’t be fooled, this is not a picnic area after a snowstorm. This is actually white sand, composed almost entirely of gypsum crystals, a rare mineral to find in sand form. Primrose Picnic Area – White Sands National Park. You can maybe tell by the rainclouds in the distance we were experiencing on and off sunshine. For this picture, I wanted lighting a little between the two as full sun was almost blinding. But all gray was too dull. Here you get just enough contrast, and with the cars and picnic shelters, some perspective of distance and size, which were important composition decisions to make the shot work.
