Harvest on the Great Plains

Land that was once covered with prairie and filled with bison, the Great Plains are a vast landscape where crops are grown wherever water is sufficient. Everywhere else, wild grasslands still cover a significant number of acres. One of my reoccurring fantasies is crossing the Great Plains in the era just before the railroad and pioneers claimed the space for farms and ranches. What did it feel like gazing at the endless prairie when you rode to the top of a tall hill? (Circle, Montana)
