The Journey of a Great Lakes Freighter

A “laker” passes under the Mackinac Bridge heading from Lake Huron to Lake Michigan. These boats can be up to 1,000′ long and often carry iron ore, coal, stone and grain. My sister and I were on watch one night as we were sailing with our parents between Beaver Island in Lake Michigan and Mackinac Island. The overnight journey was calm and uneventful with fair winds and the moon to keep us company. We were watching the lights of passing ships, but suddenly and a bit unplanned, we came remarkable close to two of these lakers making their way to the southern end of Lake Michigan. So, when I see this picture of the freighter at sunset making his way south, I wonder what small sailboat may be out there with a couple of kids that he will pass by in the middle of the night.
