The Old Road within Gibraltar Rock State Natural Area

When I was a young boy, I remember that the parking lot for Gibraltar Rock was actually at the top! Many people today who walk the Ice Age National Scenic Trail might miss this small bit of history. As I got older and my dad reached his mid-80s, he would test his endurance by hiking up the old road. We would make our way to the top, maintaining a steady pace and usually carrying lunch with us. Once we reached the summit, we would sit down to enjoy the view. For my dad at that age, having been a distance runner in college and trained with the 10th Mountain Division during World War II, the ability to reach the top of the rock always made it a special day.
