Fort Peck Lake

Northeast Montana’s Fort Peck Lake

The mighty Missouri River pauses early in its journey across the Great Plains at Fort Peck Dam, creating a massive lake with 1,520 miles of shoreline. The initial project, begun in 1933, was considered an important part of FDR’s New Deal measures and created thousands of jobs during its seven-year construction period. Other benefits to the region included flood control, electrical generation, and improved navigation. Although conditions are not as severe as those affecting reservoirs in the Colorado River Basin, the Missouri is also experiencing an extended drought, with Fort Peck Lake at roughly 65% capacity.
